What is Rotary Drum Screen?

A Rotary drum screen (also known as a drum filter,  drum screen, or Rotary screen) is a mechanical screening device used primarily in wastewater treatment and various industrial process to separate solid particles from liquid (water or process fluids) based down size.

Here's a breakdown of its key features and operation.

1. How it works?
  • Feed: The liquid stream containing solids is fed into the interior of the rotating drum.
  • Screening: As the drone rotates, the liquid pass outward through the screen media. Solids larger than the screen openings are retained inside the drum.
  • Solid transport: The rotation of the drum, aided by internal flights or gravity, moves the retained solids along the length of the drum towards the discharge end.
  • Solids dewatering and discharge: As solids move toward the discharge end, they may be lifted slightly by the rotation, allowing some drainage. High-pressure water sprays continuously clean the screen media preventing blinding and helping to wash residual organics back into the liquid stream. The cleaned solids fall off the end of the drum into a collection trough or hopper
  • Filtrate collection: The filtered liquid passing through the screen is collected underneath the drum in a channel or tank or further processing or discharge.
2. Advantages.
  • Continuous operation: Handles large, continuous flows.
  • High efficiency: Effective at removing a wide range of solids, especially fibrous materials and large debris.
  • Self-cleaning: The spray system minimizes manual cleaning and screen blinding.
  • Good solid dewatering" Internal transport allows for some drainage, producing drier screening than some other screen types.
  • Low Headloss: Typically operates with minimal upstream head pressure.
  • Robust Construction: Handles high loads and tough materials.
Drum Screen

A Rotary drum screen is a workhorse mechanical filter that uses a rotating cylindrical screen to continuously separate solids from liquid. Wastewater or process fluid enters the inside of the drum, liquid flows out through the screen, and retained solids are transported, cleaned and discharged from the end. Its continuous operation, self-cleaning capability and effectiveness make it a common choice for primary screening, especially a municipal withdrawal treatment and many industrial applications handling high flows with significant solid loads.
